If Obama Wins: The Liberal SuperMajority

http://t4toby.files.wordpress.com/2008/06/liberal_brain.jpg
An opinion piece in today's Wall Street Journal lays out in great detail what Americans will face if Barack Obama wins the presidency. The editorial begins:(emphasis added)
"If the current polls hold, Barack Obama will win the White House on November 4 and Democrats will consolidate their Congressional majorities, probably with a filibuster-proof Senate or very close to it. Without the ability to filibuster, the Senate would become like the House, able to pass whatever the majority wants."

"Though we doubt most Americans realize it, this would be one of the most profound political and ideological shifts in U.S. history. Liberals would dominate the entire government in a way they haven't since 1965, or 1933. In other words, the election would mark the restoration of the activist government that fell out of public favor in the 1970s.
If the U.S. really is entering a period of unchecked left-wing ascendancy, Americans at least ought to understand what they will be getting, especially with the media cheering it all on."

The article continues with a check list of legislation which would almost surely pass if there is a filibuster-proof senate:
  • - Medicare for all. When HillaryCare cratered in 1994, the Democrats concluded they had overreached, so they carved up the old agenda into smaller incremental steps, such as Schip for children. A strongly Democratic Congress is now likely to lay the final flagstones on the path to government-run health insurance from cradle to grave. Mr. Obama wants to build a public insurance program, modeled after Medicare and open to everyone of any income.

  • The business climate. "We have some harsh decisions to make," Speaker Nancy Pelosi warned recently, speaking about retribution for the financial panic. Look for a replay of the Pecora hearings of the 1930s, with Henry Waxman, John Conyers and Ed Markey sponsoring ritual hangings to further their agenda to control more of the private economy....Democrats could cause the economic downturn to last longer than it otherwise will by enacting regulatory overkill like Sarbanes-Oxley. Something more punitive is likely as well, for instance a windfall profits tax on oil, and maybe other industries.
  • Union supremacy. One program certain to be given right of way is "card check." Unions have been in decline for decades, now claiming only 7.4% of the private-sector work force, so Big Labor wants to trash the secret-ballot elections that have been in place since the 1930s. The "Employee Free Choice Act" would convert workplaces into union shops merely by gathering signatures from a majority of employees, which means organizers could strongarm those who opposed such a petition....
  • Taxes. Taxes will rise substantially, the only question being how high....
  • The green revolution. A tax-and-regulation scheme in the name of climate change is a top left-wing priority....
  • Free speech and voting rights. A liberal supermajority would move quickly to impose procedural advantages that could cement Democratic rule for years to come....Felons may also get the right to vote nationwide, while the Fairness Doctrine is likely to be reimposed either by Congress or the Obama FCC....
  • Special-interest potpourri....The anti-antiterror lobby would be rewarded with the end of Guantanamo and military commissions...Google and MoveOn.org would get "net neutrality" rules, subjecting the Internet to intrusive regulation for the first time.
All things considered we are in for radical change the likes of which we haven't seen since 1965 or perhaps 1933! John McCain is closing the gap and a victory for McCain/Palin is still a possibility. We must redouble our efforts if we are to save our nation from rapacious leftists who crave and covet total power!

We Must Be Racist, Fidel Castro Says So!

The image “http://www.tldm.org/News7/CarterCastro.JPG” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.
It must be comforting for some liberals that they are in tune with one of the great thug-dictators of all time. Keep thinking it's racism when Obie loses*; perpetuate the myth of racism and you nourish the blind stupidity that defines so many Obama supporters.

Castro: Racism in US keeps many away from Obama
HAVANA (AP) - Fidel Castro says a "profound racism" in the United States will stop millions from voting for Barack Obama in next month's presidential election.

Also
See the Debra J. Saunders commentary titled "Playing the Race Card". She explains quite effectively how the "race card" is being employed now. Here's some quotes:
The race card is back. After Tuesday night's debate, Washington party-crossover dean David Gergen announced it was "too early" to declare victory for Democrat Barack Obama, not because the election is a month away, but because "Obama is black."....her (Palin's reference to the Obama/Ayers association) attack was unsubstantiated and carried a racially tinged subtext that John McCain himself may come to regret."....I don't think Obama and Ayers were pals so much as co-believers of a trendy left-leaning and standards-hostile philosophy on education...And, Ayers is white. So it's hard to figure out how the AP writer construed Palin's remarks as "racially tinged," unless you see race in absolutely everything....According to a Time poll, 43 percent of white men and 48 percent of white women say they will vote for Obama, while 97 percent of black voters support Obama....there is something incongruous in examining the racism in a group that plans on voting more than 40 percent for a candidate of a different color, while ignoring a bloc expected to vote within its color lines almost exclusively....the American voter has demonstrated a conservative streak when it comes to the country's commander in chief. The American electorate has not bestowed more than 50 percent of the popular vote on the Democratic nominee since 1976 when Jimmy Carter won the White House for one term.
*Did you catch James Carville's remark the other day: "if Obama is ahead by 5 points on E day and loses; it's gonna be traumatic" Was he talking riots here?

Left Hates Free speech (by Conservatives)

A new Michael Barone commentary today takes the left to task for its obvious disdain for free speech when it's conservatives doing the speaking. The article, The Coming Obama Thugocracy mentions many attempts to stifle contrarian views, research, and speech.
(Obama said)I want you to argue with them and get in their face." Actually, Obama supporters are doing a lot more than getting into people's faces. They seem determined to shut people up.

In several instances Obama supporters have threatened criminal prosecution against those who dared to mention Obama's association with various radicals.
....in St. Louis. ,...the Obama campaign called for a criminal investigation of the American Issues Project when it ran ads highlighting Obama's ties to Ayers.

Barone's conclusion:
Obama supporters who found the campuses congenial and Obama himself, who has chosen to live all his adult life in university communities, seem to find it entirely natural to suppress speech that they don't like and seem utterly oblivious to claims that this violates the letter and spirit of the First Amendment. In this campaign, we have seen the coming of the Obama thugocracy, suppressing free speech, and we may see its flourishing in the four or eight years ahead.

America, This is What a Feminist Looks Like!

A ringing endorsement of Sarah Palin from Los Angeles National Organization for Women (NOW) President Shelly Mandel:
Powerful endorsement folks! You Tube here; excerpts follow:

"I am happy to be here....I am speaking not on behalf of NOW but as an individual....I was there in 1984....for Geraldine Ferraro, and I am here today proud to support Sarah Palin....a woman who will fight for women's rights...a woman who will fight for the middle class, a woman, who Lord knows, will shake things up....I am a life long Democrat..I don't agree with Gov. Palin on several issues....she's gonna work on persuading John McCain on ANWAR and I'm gonna try persuading her on things of my own...but... I know Sarah Palin cares about woman's rights, she cares about equality, she cares about equal pay, she cares about children, and she cares about women's lives...she's an athlete and she knows what Title 9 did for girls like her...change must come to Washington and Sarah Palin has what it takes to lead that charge....I believe she is courageous..I believe she has integrity...and I know Sarah Palin is a reformer who will break up the old boy network....buck the system and get Washington back on our side...it is an honor to call her sister...America. this is what a feminist looks like!"

Sic Her Hillary! Crush Palin! Left Feminist Fantasy...

Radical left feminist Rebecca Traister wails today in a Salon piece titled "Zombie Feminists of the RNC". Her thesis is as much an attack on the Democrat Party as on Sarah Palin. She feels the Dems failed to take up the issue of blatant sexism against Hillary Clinton, something which the Republicans duly noted. Traister says:

...it may chafe to hear Rudy Giuliani and John McCain hold forth on the injustice of gender bias, what really burns is that we never heard a peep or squawk or gurgle of this nature from anyone in the Democratic Party during the entire 100 years Hillary Clinton was running for president...Only after she was good and gone did Howard Dean come out of his cave to squeak about the amount of sexist media bias Clinton faced....if we inadvertently paved the way for this, then the Democratic Party mixed the concrete, painted lanes on the road, put up streetlights and called it an interstate. The role of the left in this travesty is almost too painful to contemplate just yet....
Her desire for Hillary to step up and destroy Palin is so visceral that she fantasizes :

...I was overcome by the desire to see Clinton take on Palin, not only checking her but fouling her, smushing her, absolutely crushing her...
Even more bizarrely she rants:

It's true that the last time I had this kind of visceral yearning for a politician to save the day was on the evening of Sept. 11, when the only person whose face I wanted to see on my television was Bill Clinton's. Perhaps when the Clintons took office in my 18th year, they became imprinted on my brain as my presidential parent-figures, my ur-protectors. But it's hard not to notice that if that's the case, it's Bill I want to nurture and soothe me, and Hillary I want to show up, guns blazing Ripley-style, to surprise the mother alien just as she is about to feast on independent voters, protectively shouting, "Get away from them, you bitch!"
Meanwhile, Hillary is lying low, licking her wounds and contemplating a (increasingly unlikely) future where she can again compete.

Gov. Sarah Palin vs Animal Advocates

Many organizations and groups were calling for rejection of Gov. Sarah Palin as Republican nominee for Vice President citing her positions on predator control via aerial shooting. While this is a very serious matter for animal advocates it is primarily a matter to be settled by Alaska's citizens and their legislature. It is possible, however, that the practice could be addressed on the federal level when McCain and Palin take office. Aerial hunting is prohibited under The Airborne Hunting Act of 1972 and only continues in Alaska via a loophole in the law. (see below)

I am not a single issue voter and I support Sarah Palin for numerous reasons above and beyond the single issue of Alaska's Fish and Game laws. However, I would certainly wish to confront the McCain/Palin administration on this issue when they take office. Some of the history of the controversy I discuss below.

The question of predator control involving aerial shooting of wolves and other animals is a contentious one in Alaska and, indeed, in the lower 48. Animal rights organizations are furious with Governor Sarah Palin for her support of Alaska bill HB 256/SB 176 the intent of which was "Clarify, Clean UP Statutes, Encourages Abundance-Based Management". The Defender of Wild Life Action Fund states:

"Governor Palin is an active promoter of Alaska's aerial hunting program whereby wolves and bears are shot from the air or chased by airplanes to the point of exhaustion before the pilot lands the plane and a gunner shoots the animals point blank."
Before Alaska statehood in 1959, shooting wolves from airplanes was common. Aerial sport hunting was banned in 1972, but the law allowed aerial shooting for predator control.

In 1996 and 2000, voters rejected using aircraft to help track and kill wolves. The Legislature, in both cases, caved in to special interest groups and overturned the measures.

Nick Jans, co-sponsor of Ballot Measure 2, expects victory again in the Aug. 26 primary election. Alaskans for Wildlife collected nearly 57,000 signatures to get the initiative on the ballot. Defenders of Wildlife, a national wildlife conservation group, is one of its principal supporters.

"This is an issue that has been addressed and addressed again. It is a clear matter. The will of the people has already been known and we are just reasserting it here," Jans said. "We are both puzzled and enraged that we are back at this point again." Source

Unfortunately, this years measure did not pass; it was rejected by the voters 56%-44%. Ultimately this is an issue that will have to be settled by the citizens of the state through interaction with their legislators. Governor Palin has had to consider all of the competing interests and come down on the side of what is best for her state in the long run. In May 2007 Palin

" introduced a bill in the State House and Senate that will simplify and clarify Alaska’s intensive management law for big game and the state's "same day airborne hunting" law. “I have said many times that my administration is committed to management of game for abundance, and to a proactive, science-based predator management program where appropriate,” said the Governor. “The bill I am introducing will give the Board of Game and state wildlife managers the tools they need to actively manage important game herds and help thousands of Alaskan families put food on their tables"

Aerial hunting is illegal under federal law (the Airborne Hunting Act of 1972) but Alaska has managed to circumvent the ban by a loophole.

"For more than 30 years, the state of Alaska has attempted to circumvent the intent of the Airborne Hunting Act by exploiting a loophole in the law allowing states to “administer” wildlife using aircraft. Under the guise of wildlife management, Alaska contends its current aerial hunting program is not hunting at all but constitutes legitimate wildlife management that artificially boosts wild moose and caribou populations."

The loophole allows:

...for predator control, permitting state employees or licensed individuals to shoot from an aircraft for the sake of protecting "land, water, wildlife, livestock, domesticated animals, human life, or crops." Source

Buchanan: Palin Pick Big Gamble, Paying Off Big

Pat Buchanan is way on board for Sarah Palin:
The risk John McCain took last Friday is comparable to the 72-year-old ex-fighter pilot knocking back two shots and flying his F-16 under the Golden Gate Bridge.....McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his co-pilot was the biggest gamble in presidential history. As of now, it is paying off, big-time.

John McCain's daughter, Meghan, is the only member of McCain's extensive family who is actively campaigning. The 23 year old Meghan has her rather impressive web site where she blogs with stories and videos. In photo above she is pictured with Piper Palin.

Now that Obambi has made his choice let us all hope John McCain makes the right choice and selects Alaska Governor Sarah Palin for his V.P. Sarah Palin is youthful (44), very smart, and hot. And, best of all, she'll make Joe Biden look like the chump he really is.

When Justice Was Swift...

I was preparing photographs for a book sale and came across this interesting piece of history:

The 1942 military tribunals of the 8 Nazi saboteurs. Four Germans landed on an eastern Long Island NY beach on June 13, 1942; and four landed in Florida on the 17th. Betrayed by one of the group after being spotted on the Long Island beach they were rounded up, tried by military tribunal July 8 to August 1.There was a four day delay while the Supreme Court was consulted, and the death sentences were carried out on August 8. Only 6 of the 8 were put to death; one got life imprisonment and the other 30 years. Interestingly, while all eight were born in Germany, two were American citizens, and three had married American girls. Arrested with them were six women and eight men, American citizens accused of sheltering the saboteurs. The book: Collier's Photographic History of World War II.

Obama and Reparations: Apologies Not Enough?

The U.S. House of Representatives has issued a formal apology for slavery:
WASHINGTON: The House of Representatives issued an unprecedented apology to black Americans for the wrongs committed against them and their ancestors who suffered under slavery and segregation laws.... The House "apologizes to African-Americans on behalf of the people of the US, for the wrongs committed against them and their ancestors who suffered under slavery and Jim Crow." Source: Times of India
Such apologies are not unprecedented; six U.S. states have already formally apologized, most recently Florida. The other five are Maryland, North Carolina, Alabama, New Jersey, and Virginia.
Obama mentioned
reparations the other day:
Obama said:
"I consistently believe that when it comes to whether it's Native Americans or African-American issues or reparations, the most important thing for the U.S. government to do is not just offer words, but offer deeds." (emphasis added)
Source: Honolulu Star Bulletin
I wonder what he means by deeds?
The idea of reparations certainly reached its zenith when The African World Reparations and Truth Commission announced it was demanding $777 Trillion (that's trillion with a "T") from the West as reparation for the slave trade and colonialism.

Video commentator "Zo" aka "SuperSlave" has produced a series of excellent videos on contemporary racial politics. The video below makes specific reference to the notion of reparations for slavery and other ills foisted on African-Americans.

Also see: Democrats and Racial Politics: From Jim Crow to Barack Obama by Francis Wright
Excerpt:
As author Michael Scheurer so succinctly stated, the Democratic Party is the party of the four S’s: Slavery, Secession,Segregation, and now Socialism. Because the Republican Party was started in 1854 as the anti-slavery party, and Republicans fought for freedom and equality for blacks, the early civil rights leaders, including Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth, were Republicans.

Happy Trails: American Cowboy Day July 26

Bills pending in Congress, but not yet enacted into law, would declare the 4th Saturday in July "National Day of the American Cowboy". Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush have been labeled "cowboys" by their detractors on the left. The following poem is perhaps a little corny but don't you think it describes fairly well the ideals of conservative Americans.

"National Day of the American Cowboy"
This is a day we set out to give praise
To those who honor the Cowboy ways.
The American Cowboy is a true hero,
Who helped our nation to thrive and grow.
The cowboy was a true pioneer,
Who braved the wild western frontier.
Not only did he tame the American West,
He stood for the values which we think of as best:
He believes in hard work, and playing hard too,
And in honoring women in all that they do.
To be independent and stand up for what's right,
To be courageous and honest and not run from a fight.
To be brave and loyal, to ride for the brand,
And be a good steward of his livestock and land.
Those are timeless values that still hold true,
Still used every day in what modern cowboys do.
Now the U.S. Senate has voted to have a day
To honor the American Cowboy in this way.
We give thanks for all that cowboys and cowgirls do,
To keep the Cowboy way alive and true.
So we honor this legacy for the values it will employ,
As we celebrate the National Day of the American Cowboy.

Famous Blue Burqa

And what can I tell you my brother, my killer
What can I possibly say?
I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you
Im glad you stood in my way.
(L Cohen: "Famous Blue Raincoat")

These unfortunate women were accused of prostituting themselves to U.S. military and American contractors and were dispatched by the Taliban.
The women, dressed in blue burqas, were shot and killed just outside Ghazni city in central Afghanistan, said Sayed Ismal, a spokesman for Ghazni's governor. He called the two "innocent local people".
