(Newser) – A German frozen food company is trying to cash in on Obamania by selling fried Obama fingers, Der Speigel reports. The Southern-style fried chicken snack was renamed as part of an "America week' promotion. Makers say they were unaware that the name could be viewed as insensitive in light of racist stereotypes associating African-Americans with fried chicken.
"It was supposed to be a homage to the American lifestyle and the new US president," said the company's sales manager.
The fingers will probably be off the shelves by April 3, when their namesake is scheduled to visit German Chancellor Angela Merkel. But if they're not, the chancellor should be wary causing utter befuddlement and potential offense to her guest -- and simply serve him up some good old German sausage.Rachel Lucas blogged about the Obama Fingers the other day.
I think it’s absolutely hilarious. But I really don’t get foreigners’ obsession with this guy, or with America. They bitch about how we think too much of our own importance, but it’s like the nerds in high school bitching about the popular kids while writing the popular kids’ names all over their notebooks with big hearts around them. It’s a little creepy. The really hilarious part of her article is the comments: "Well Obama has been giving us the finger for a while now", and "You think Obama chicken is racist, just wait until they introduce Obama-wurst", and "As long as they don’t start selling Brazil nuts as “Obama toes,” I guess we’ll survive"and "The last guy the Germans went all ga-ga over was Hitler. Coincidence? I am beginning to think not."

The Republican Fisherman
A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below.
She shouted to him, 'Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am.'
The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, 'You're in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above a ground elevation of 2346 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude.'
She rolled her eyes and said, 'You must be a Republican.'
'I am,' replied the man. 'How did you know?'
'Well,' answered the balloonist, ' everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to do with your information, and I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help to me'
The man smiled and responded, 'You must be a Democrat.'
'I am,' replied the balloonist. 'How did you know?'
'Well,' said the man, 'you don't know where you are or where you are going.
You've risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air.
You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem.
You're in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but, somehow, now it's my fault.
Kimberley Big Hole - South Africa: Apparently the largest ever hand-dug excavation in the world, this 1097 meter deep mine yielded over 3 tons of diamonds before being closed in 1914.
Glory Hole - Monticello Dam, California: This is the 'Glory Hole' at Monticello dam, and it's the largest in the world of this type of spillway, its size enabling it to consume 14,400 cubic feet of water every second (note: a glory hole is used when a dam is at full capacity and water needs to be drained from the reservoir).
Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah: This is supposedly the largest man-made excavation on earth. Extraction began in 1863 and still continues today, the pit increasing in size constantly. In its current state the hole is 0.75 miles deep and 2.5 miles wide and covering 1,900 acres.
Great Blue Hole, Belize: This incredible geographical phenomenon known as a blue hole is situated 60 miles off the mainland of Belize. There are numerous blue holes around the world, but none as stunning as this one.
Mirny Diamond Mine, Serbia: I'm pretty sure most people have seen this one. It's an absolute beast and holds the title of largest open diamond mines in the world. At 525 meters deep, with a top diameter of 1200 meters, there's even a no-fly zone above the hole due to a few helicopters having been sucked in.
Diavik Mine, Canada: The mine is so huge and the area so remote that it has its own airport with a runway large enough to accommodate a Boeing 737. It looks equally cool when the surrounding water is frozen.
Sinkhole in Guatemala: These photos are of a sinkhole that occurred in Guatemala. The hole swallowed a dozen homes and killed at least three people.
The most terrifying hole of all: This is the famous 'Rat Hole' that you've read so much about lately. It is capable of swallowing trillions upon trillions of U.S. dollars from the real economy each and every year. Most of that money is never seen again.Plenty of Room

Iraq's Christians, a scant minority in this overwhelmingly Muslim country, quietly celebrated Christmas on Thursday with a present from the government, which declared it an official holiday for the first time.....In his homily on Thursday, Chaldean Cardinal Emmanuel III Delly praised the establishment of Christmas as an official holiday as a step toward easing tensions.
"I thank the government for giving chances to all to serve each other for the general benefit, and I thank it too for making this day an official holiday where we pray to God to make us trust each other as brothers," he said at the Christmas Mass before several dozen worshippers in the small chapel of a Baghdad monastery.A senior Shiite cleric, Ammar al-Hakim, attended the Mass flanked by bodyguards in a gesture of cooperation with Christians.
"I thank the visitors here and ask them to share happiness and love with their brothers on Christmas; by this they will build a glorious Iraq," the cardinal said.

And no, the coming of Christmas to Iraq did not happen the way The Onion (Dec 17) recently described it!
Even though Clinton won ___ primaries on Tuesday, even though many of them concede there is probably no stopping Candidate ___ now, dozens of Democratic senators and representatives remain reluctant to endorse h__.
Senator R. scheduled a news conference for Friday to announce his backing. Senator D. told news organizations in his home state that the moment had come to rally around Clinton. But beyond that there was little movement.
Of 264 superdelegates in the House and Senate, 93, or 35 percent, have endorsed Clinton so far, according to a continuing survey by The New York Times.... and most made their statements some time ago. A much larger number remain officially uncommitted.
Clinton's press secretary, insisted that "people are starting to rally around the flag," and she mentioned Mr. R. as an example. She also said the Governor plans to meet with uncommitted superdelegates on Capitol Hill on April 29, the day after the Pennsylvania primary, when Congress will return from the Easter recess.
But Representative E.of Ohio, more willing perhaps to speak on the record than many of his colleagues because he has announced his retirement from the House, said that he and some of his colleagues had constituted an informal "Missouri caucus -- a show-me caucus" -- and would do nothing for now.
"The voters haven't embraced Clinton, so I don't see any reason why I should endorse h__," Mr. E. said. "Look at the exit polls. People have terrible doubts about this ___, and we're talking about Democrats."
In the State N. primary Tuesday, the turnout was exceptionally low, 29 percent of the electorate backed Candidate T.,.... two-thirds of the voters said they were dissatisfied with the choice presented to them, and 4 in 10 said they doubted Clinton had the integrity to be President.
.... the party chairman, has been phoning uncommitted delegates and others, "discussing the lay of the political territory," as he described it. He denied putting pressure on anybody, but others in the party said he was sending a subtle but clear message that it was time to halt the squabbling.
"There's a real tug-of-war up here," said one House member. "Especially on this side, there are a lot of people who are terrified that all the character questions, all the negatives about Clinton that showed up in N, make h__ so weak that a lot of people will lose their seats."
A prominent Senator, who also asked not to be identified, added, "lots of people are hearing from home, 'Keep it open, even if the odds make it look impossible,' because Candidate X may self-destruct before the convention."
... a leading Democratic money-raiser, has called together 65 big party contributors to discuss "how a brokered convention might work."Aaron and Christine Boring accuse Google of an "intentional and/or grossly reckless invasion" of their seclusion and privacy since they live on a street that is "clearly marked with a 'Private Road' sign," according to a lawsuit the couple filed this week in Allegheny County's Court of Common Pleas.....The Borings are seeking in excess of $25,000 in damages and want a court order directing Google to destroy images of their home....while they are litigating, perhaps the Borings should consider suing Allegheny County's Office of Property Assessments, which includes a photo of their home (which was built in 1916 and sits on 1.82 acres) on its web site.
