Obama-Rev Wright: Chris Dodd Weighs In....

In the following clip (5:39) from today's Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace we see our Senator Dodd, a Barack Obama supporter, visibly annoyed at having to answer questions about the relationship between Sen. Obama and his former pastor the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. He attempts to end the discussion by saying Obama has rejected his pastor's statements and that's that. Wallace points out that Obama only rejected Wright's inflammatory statements this week after they received widespread coverage in the media including ABC's Brian Ross. Dodd counters with words to the effect that Obama didn't know about it until it surfaced in the press. Wallace says Obama knew about it year ago when he commenced his campaign and dis invited the reverend from officiating at the kickoff event. All Dodd could do was to repeat we need to get to the "real issues", as though the Obama-Wright affair was not one.

Wright Rants and Wrong Chants....

Yesterday I posted the video of Fox's Major Owens interviewing Barack Obama about his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Today I am posting 2 videos consisting of an interview conducted by CNN's Anderson Cooper covering pretty much the same ground. And, Obama gives pretty much the same answers as in the previous interview and does not make a very convincing case for his professed ignorance of goings on at the Trinity United Church of Christ. For example, he says that the recently surfaced statements of Wright do not reflect his views and beliefs and that they are also not the views of the congregation. This statement is flatly contradicted by the video evidence. We clearly see the worshipers standing and clapping, jumping up and down, high fiving, whooping and hollering throughout the Wright rants. One can make allowances for the exuberance commonly expressed at Black religious events. Here the enthusiasm, however, is not for their Saviour or Lord but for the truly bizarre and outrageously false claims emanating from the pulpit.
Part I (07:34)

Part II (04:24)

But wait, there's much more. the next video (08:27) is from the 3/14 Hannity and Colmes Show on Fox featuring more of Dr. Wright's rantings which program guest Tanya Acker, a Democratic strategist labels "crazy". Sean Hannity asserts "this is going to end his (Obama's) presidential run...or any chance he has to win..." Hannity further outlines the facts that at Obama's formal announcement as a presidential candidate in Feb '07 he had to dis invite the pastor because he knew full well what the guy had said in the past. He also had to have known of Wright's visit to Khaddffi in Libya in the company of Minister Farakhan, and Trinity United's bestowal of a "Lifetime Achievement Award" on Farakhan. Additionally Obama and family gave tens of thousands of dollars to Trinity United.

The Reverend Wright: So Wrong, So Long....

Here is breaking news video from Fox News:

ABC News' Brian Ross, which was the only main stream news source to delve into the racist, America hating sermons delivered from the pulpit by the Rev Jeremiah Wright, has just announced (3/14/08 9:12 PM) that Wright has been removed from the Obama campaign spiritual advisory committee.
Citing the need for a ".... sabbatical.... that it was important for him to step out of the spotlight in this situation."Obama said that he did not know the extent of Wright's controversial comments until recently. He confirmed that he was not in the church when Wright made the comments that were reported this week.

He had to have been in the church when at least some of the minister's other hateful sermons were preached. Obama sought to further distance himself from the "God Damn America" sermon saying:
I wasn't in church during the time that these statements were made," Obama said. "I did not hear such incendiary language myself, personally. Either in conversations with him or when I was in the pew, he always preached the social gospel."

Of course the larger question is, given the scores of inflammatory sermons by Rev Wright, which ones does he agree with.

The video below is by Jane Fisler Hoffman who says she is a minister of the United Church of Christ and attends Barack Obama's church, Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago which until last month was lead by the controversial minister Jeremiah Wright. This video and another similar video appear both on the church website and on one of Obama's campaign web sites. The video attempts to place Trinity United in the mainstream of American Christian practice. I believe that Trinity United is far from the mainstream of even the left wing national United Church of Christ but totally out of bounds in respect to most Christian congregations in this nation. This blog posting is an attempt to bring some clarity to the controversy involving candidate Obama and his recently retired pastor. It is known that the Barack Obama family has belonged to the Trinity United church of Christ for some 20 years. The Rev. Wright married the couple, baptized their children, and blessed their new home.

Following are several versions of the Black Values System that have appeared on the website of Trinity United church of Christ. Barack Obama needs to be asked if these precepts inform his philosophical underpinnings. If as a member of Trinity United he subscribes to these principles then one is entitled to wonder how he can be a President of all the people of the United States. Mitt Romney's religious beliefs were probed ad naseum by the press until he had finally to make a speech solely to explain his faith.

We are a congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian... Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain "true to our native land," the mother continent, the cradle of civilization. God has superintended our pilgrimage through the days of slavery, the days of segregation, and the long night of racism. It is God who gives us the strength and courage to continuously address injustice as a people, and as a congregation. We constantly affirm our trust in God through cultural expression of a Black worship service and ministries which address the Black Community.

Trinity United Church of Christ adopted the Black Value System written by the Manford Byrd Recognition Committee chaired by Vallmer Jordan in 1981. We believe in the following 12 precepts and covenantal statements. These Black Ethics must be taught and exemplified in homes, churches, nurseries and schools, wherever Blacks are gathered. They must reflect on the following concepts:

  1. Commitment to God
  2. Commitment to the Black Community
  3. Commitment to the Black Family
  4. Dedication to the Pursuit of Education
  5. Dedication to the Pursuit of Excellence
  6. Adherence to the Black Work Ethic
  7. Commitment to Self-Discipline and Self-Respect
  8. Disavowal of the Pursuit of "Middleclassness"
  9. Pledge to make the fruits of all developing and acquired skills available to the Black Community
  10. Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources for Strengthening and Supporting Black Institutions
  11. Pledge allegiance to all Black leadership who espouse and embrace the Black Value System
  12. Personal commitment to embracement of the Black Value System
At some point within the past year the statement above was removed and replaced by the text below:

We are a congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian... Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain "true to our native land," the mother continent, the cradle of civilization. God has superintended our pilgrimage through the days of slavery, the days of segregation, and the long night of racism. It is God who gives us the strength and courage to continuously address injustice as a people, and as a congregation. We constantly affirm our trust in God through cultural expression of a Black worship service and ministries which address the Black Community.

The Pastor as well as the membership of Trinity United Church of Christ is committed to a 10-point Vision:

  1. A congregation committed to ADORATION.
  2. A congregation preaching SALVATION.
  3. A congregation actively seeking RECONCILIATION.
  4. A congregation with a non-negotiable COMMITMENT TO AFRICA.
  5. A congregation committed to BIBLICAL EDUCATION.
  6. A congregation committed to CULTURAL EDUCATION.
  7. A congregation committed to the HISTORICAL EDUCATION OF AFRICAN PEOPLE IN DIASPORA.
  8. A congregation committed to LIBERATION.
  9. A congregation committed to RESTORATION.
  10. A congregation working towards ECONOMIC PARITY.

Now we note that the original Black Value System has returned with additional commentary. The Black Value System as on the Church web site now:

THE BLACK VALUE SYSTEM

Trinity United Church of Christ adopted the Black Value System, written by the Manford Byrd Recognition Committee, chaired by the late Vallmer Jordan in 1981.

Dr. Manford Byrd, our brother in Christ, withstood the ravage of being denied his earned ascension to the number one position in the Chicago School System. His dedication to the pursuit of excellence, despite systematic denials, has inspired the congregation of Trinity United Church of Christ. Prayerfully, we have called upon the wisdom of all past generations of suffering Blacks for guidance in fashioning an instrument of Black self-determination, the Black Value System.

Beginning in 1982, an annual Black Value System – Educational Scholarship in the name of Dr. Byrd was instituted. The first recipient of the Dr. Manford Byrd Award, which is given annually to the man or woman who best exemplifies the Black Value System, was our brother, Dr. Manford Byrd.

These Black Ethics must be taught and exemplified in homes, churches, nurseries and schools, wherever Blacks are gathered. They consist of the following concepts:

1. Commitment to God. “The God of our weary years” will give us the strength to give up prayerful passivism and become Black Christian Activists, soldiers for Black freedom and the dignity of all humankind.

2. Commitment to the Black Community. The highest level of achievement for any Black person must be a contribution of strength and continuity of the Black Community.
3. Commitment to the Black Family. The Black family circle must generate strength, stability and love, despite the uncertainty of externals, because these characteristics are required if the developing person is to withstand warping by our racist competitive society.

Those Blacks who are blessed with membership in a strong family unit must reach out and expand that blessing to the less fortunate.

4. Dedication to the Pursuit of Education. We must forswear anti-intellectualism. Continued survival demands that each Black person be developed to the utmost of his/her mental potential despite the inadequacies of the formal education process. “Real education” fosters understanding of ourselves as well as every aspect of our environment. Also, it develops within us the ability to fashion concepts and tools for better utilization of our resources, and more effective solutions to our problems. Since the majority of Blacks have been denied such learning, Black Education must include elements that produce high school graduates with marketable skills, a trade or qualifications for apprenticeships, or proper preparation for college.

Basic education for all Blacks should include Mathematics, Science, Logic, General Semantics, Participative Politics, Economics and Finance, and the Care and Nurture of Black minds.

5. Dedication to the Pursuit of Excellence. To the extent that we individually reach for, even strain for excellence, we increase, geometrically, the value and resourcefulness of the Black Community. We must recognize the relativity of one’s best; this year’s best can be bettered next year. Such is the language of growth and development. We must seek to excel in every endeavor.
6. Adherence to the Black Work Ethic. “It is becoming harder to find qualified people to work in Chicago.” Whether this is true or not, it represents one of the many reasons given by businesses and industries for deserting the Chicago area. We must realize that a location with good facilities, adequate transportation and a reputation for producing skilled workers will attract industry. We are in competition with other cities, states and nations for jobs. High productivity must be a goal of the Black workforce.
7. Commitment to Self-Discipline and Self-Respect. To accomplish anything worthwhile requires self-discipline. We must be a community of self-disciplined persons if we are to actualize and utilize our own human resources, instead of perpetually submitting to exploitation by others. Self-discipline, coupled with a respect for self, will enable each of us to be an instrument of Black Progress and a model for Black Youth.
8. Disavowal of the Pursuit of “Middleclassness.” Classic methodology on control of captives teaches that captors must be able to identify the “talented tenth” of those subjugated, especially those who show promise of providing the kind of leadership that might threaten the captor’s control.

Those so identified are separated from the rest of the people by:

1. Killing them off directly, and/or fostering a social system that encourages them to kill off one another.
2. Placing them in concentration camps, and/or structuring an economic environment that induces captive youth to fill the jails and prisons.
3. Seducing them into a socioeconomic class system which, while training them to earn more dollars, hypnotizes them into believing they are better than others and teaches them to think in terms of “we” and “they” instead of “us.”
4. So, while it is permissible to chase “middleclassness” with all our might, we must avoid the third separation method – the psychological entrapment of Black “middleclassness.” If we avoid this snare, we will also diminish our “voluntary” contributions to methods A and B. And more importantly, Black people no longer will be deprived of their birthright: the leadership, resourcefulness and example of their own talented persons.

9. Pledge to Make the Fruits of All Developing and Acquired Skills Available to the Black Community.

10. Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources for Strengthening and Supporting Black Institutions.

11. Pledge Allegiance to All Black Leadership Who Espouse and Embrace the Black Value System.

12. Personal Commitment to Embracement of the Black Value System. To measure the worth and validity of all activity in terms of positive contributions to the general welfare of the Black Community and the Advancement of Black People towards freedom

Obama's Pastor Jeremiah Wright: Down But Not Out....

The Rev. Jeremiah H. Wright may have stepped down from the pulpit but he cannot be allowed out of public scrutiny; his race baiting, anti-semitic "sermons" need to be addressed in the context of the Barack Obama candidacy. The Barack Obama family's 20 year relationship with this church and Pastor Wright raises many questions. First of all we need to know why a candidate for U.S. President would feel comfortable in a church whose preacher was an obvious racist, a segregationist, and an America hater. Next, since the press made such a big deal about Mitt Romney's Morman faith even to the point of asking him if his primary loyalty would be to the LDS Church elders or to the U.S. constitution, it would seem fair to ask of Barack Obama a similar question; i.e, would a President Obama look for guidance from, and pledge allegiance to, the precepts of his "black values" church or to the U.S. Constitution?

God Damn Amerikkka

Fear and Ricin in Las Vegas....

Okay, let's set the scene:
One Roger von Bergendorff has taken a suite at a Las Vegas hotel. He has two cats, a dog, firearms, anarchist literature, deadly ricin and its precursor, castor beans.
Sounds innocent enough, right? That's what the authorities are saying at any rate:
Quote:
Las Vegas police spokesman Bill Cassell said Von Bergendorff "is not considered a criminal suspect."
(Police Captain Joseph) Lombardo said: "I don't want to make any conclusions with the anarchist-type textbook. It doesn't make you a terrorist because you have this type textbook. It doesn't make you a terrorist if you possess firearms."
Police said Von Bergendorff had a misdemeanor arrest several years ago but would release no other details until the ricin investigation is completed.
Meanwhile von Bergendorff has been hospitalized for 2 weeks after exposure to the ricin in his rooms. This is a very strange story harking back to the Anglo/Russo intrigue of a few months ago involving assassins using ricin.
From Las Vegas Review Journal

I don't know how many Roger von Bergendorrf's there can be, but I suspect not many. One such named person is a video comics producer whatever that is.

Barack Hussein Obama, Barack Milhous Obama, Barack Not-That Hussein Obama....

Barack Obama and Relatives in Africa (1987)

What's in a name? Are we now not allowed to use BHO's full name? Mark Levin came up with a couple of humorous alternatives yesterday: Barack Milhouse Obama and Barack Not-That-Hussein Obama! We freely speak of Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK), Richard Milhous Nixon (RMN), William Jefferson Clinton (WJC) but we can't use Barack Hussein Obama (BHO); don't even try to go with BO. Remember Joe Biden said he's clean, Oh, and don't forget either;we can't call BHO liberal he doesn't like that. Fact is, BHO is beyond liberal with his collectivist ideology.

Traditional Attire: Obama v Hillary....

Senator Clinton's campaign responded to the controversy over the photo below of Barack Obama in Kenya:

....there are photos of her from around the world wearing "the costume of the country" she was visiting.

"Every time I traveled to foreign countries, I wore the costume of the country. You can find dozen of pictures of me in different parts of the world," said Clinton. "You can find me wearing African outfits, Latin American outfits, Asian outfits, when you travel to foreign countries, it’s a sign of respect. What does that have to do with anything?"

Nader to Run; Obama Not Worried....

Perennial spoiler Ralph Nader has announced he intends to enter this year's presidential contest according to the Associated Press. Nader is scheduled on the "meet the Press" program this morning. According to The Wall Street Journal:
Barack Obama said today during a visit at the Ohio State University Medical Center that he wasn’t terribly concerned about the prospect of a Nader campaign. “I think the job of the Democratic Party is to be so compelling that a few percentage [points] of the vote going to another candidate is not going to make any difference.”

It was, however, those few percentage points of the vote which gave "W" his margin of victory in Florida in 2004. Nader is hated by many Democrats for that reason and is bound to incur their wrath this time around as well. It wasn't all that long ago when another spoiler named Ross Perot had handed the victory to Bill Clinton in 1992. In that race Perot received 18.9% of the vote compared to Clinton's 43%.The indefatigable Nader will be 74 in a few days.

The Green Party folks have a draft Nader movement in place and have been especially excited by a Nader candidacy since John Edwards left the race in January. This has got to auger well for the Republicans.

Voting Thoughtfully in Seattle....

The following folks were all voted most sexy in the Seattle weekly The Stranger's feature titled "Meet Your Objects of Lust":

Evan Rodd A sex-positive, carnally knowledgeable drummer? Suh-WOON! (And, oh yeah: He’s voting Obama.)
Fuchsia FoXXX is rooting for Hillary Clinton "because of the vagina thing,"
Tomoko (aka "Coco") I want whoever shows up for my opening reception on April 5 to be the next president,
Sarah Scherer, thinks Obama is the sexiest presidential candidate
Holly Chernobyl supports "our underwater overlord Cthulhu" for president.
Amber Davis a Republican, and not at all happy with the way things are going in America, is considering giving Obama her vote in the 2008 election. As for Hillary, she doesn't like her one bit.
Luke Dorsey a solidly undecided voter who leans Democrat
Arielle Davis plans to vote for Obama in '08. "He'd have to do something pretty bad for me not to vote for him," she says.
Jarred Grimes is rooting for Obama.
AK Bennett, proud Obama delegate
Joshua Meacham a certified Obama guy. "I feel like he's going to unify our country," he says. "I like the Clintons, but I think they're a little bit shady and corrupt
Annie, says she can't decide between presidential candidates: "I'm on the line between Obama and Hillary."

All apparently were asked about their presidential preferences and the answers do not auger well for our nation.

Photobucket

I kinda like Coco though, she nominated herself and won. She says:
I blow glass for work at Glassybaby, and for fun at Viscosity glass studio. Feeling extremely sexy, she nominated herself because, she says, "I'm also a pick-up artist for burlesque shows, a fetish performer, and a model. I think I'm the only glass blower who has done naked sushi.....What can I say? I blow for money. And I'm awesome at it."

Obama Stealth and Bush Bras....

The above photo is from an aerial photo by North Carolina TV station WTVD. Depicted are Obama and Edwards at the Edwards' home in Chapel Hill NC. The MyWay News reports:
CHICAGO (AP) - Barack Obama sneaked down to North Carolina Sunday and met with former rival John Edwards, who has yet to make an endorsement in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Officials at North Carolina television station WTVD said they have video taken from a helicopter of Obama leaving Edwards' home in Chapel Hill. A producer said the station was "tipped off" about the meeting, but said the source was confidential.

The Obama campaign confirmed the meeting. Although reporters normally travel everywhere with Obama, he left them behind to fly down in secret from his hometown.

Of course this leads to much speculation about the Edwards candidate endorsement:
The couple has been impressed with Clinton, who has more effectively courted them since the 2004 vice presidential nominee dropped out, people who talk to the Edwardses say. Obama has been less attentive, they say, and some of those close to the Edwardses have been annoyed that Obama has continued to ridicule him for once saying his biggest weakness is that he has a powerful response to seeing pain in others.

The campaign is getting interesting, one might even say it's heating up drastically (see the Bill Clinton photo below where he confronts an Obama supporter in Canton OH)

Meanwhile "W" is greeted with great fanfare and adulation during his trip to Africa.Reutors reports:
Beaming repeatedly during a press conference with Kikwete, (Bush) made a point of referring to his welcome on the streets, which he described as "very moving".

Bush opened his remarks by saying "Vipi Mambo!" before turning to U.S. journalists and adding: "For the uneducated, that's Swahili for 'Howdy Y'all'" --a typical Texas greeting.

Kikwete told Bush: "The outpouring of warmth and affection from the people of Tanzania that you have witnessed since your arrival is a genuine reflection of what we feel towards you and towards the American people."....

In a reference to Bush's domestic problems, Kikwete added: "Different people may have different views about you and your administration and your legacy.

Bush was greeted on his arrival in Tanzania by women sporting "Bush Bras"!

Obama: Hysteria, Obasms and Obamania….

h/t Wonkette

"Is it true that Barack's caucus is bigger than Hillary's?" (last comment on this video)

The national obsession with all things Obama continues. Blogger J. Grant Swank, Jr. writes, Magic City Morning Star (2/13) :
Forget issues. He's the man who wraps up JFK, Martin Luther King, Jr., Mandela - for blacks and whites, particularly women and children - and the young who can vote. Mob hysteria - mob psychology - could win the November ballot for Barack Obama. There is no doubt about it. It can sweep across the nation, grow and grow and grow, until talking about the nation's pressing matters will fly out the window....he has audiences who are thirsting for nothing but flimflam; otherwise, Obama's groupies would not wow him as they do. They howl. They weep. The clutch. After all, they're not constituents. They're groupies caught up in Obamamania....He mesmerizes his listeners as a drug dealer wraps up a sale. Now that's truly scary. It's all smoke and mirrors, folks. It's all senior high school president oratory in hopes of winning the election down the hall. That's it. He's got the music entree, then there's the tilt to the head, the cadence in his speech, the compassion in his face, the slick lean body, the shiny white teeth, the sympathy in his voice and the assurance in his cliches. But all he's got is a bag of tricks - snappy words like "Change" and "Unite." That's it. He's a politico magician with a bag of tricks.

Beatlemania comes to mind:

Blogger mssinglemama's comment on my previous post tends to underscore what is going on here:
Crazy about the Code Pink ladies - very interesting tactic. Nearly as bad as Hillary crying.

I have to tell you though - if I saw Obama I’d probably faint too…bottom line - he’s hot, so intelligent, elouqent and powerful - everything a woman wants in a man. And the leader this single mama is voting for.

Obama: The Hysteria, The Hysteria....

Obama is “The Man” women are fainting in the crowd just like when Sinatra was on stage. Today in New Hampshire a woman just fainted and last month at an Opra rally they were dropping like Flies. Edwards also has them falling.

Jim Vicevich, our Connecticut WTIC morning radio conservative talk host, notes the eerie similarity of female fainting episodes at Obama rallies. James Taranto's "The Best of the Web Today" picks up this theme in a posting today.

"James Vicevich, a Connecticut radio talk show host, takes note of yet another creepy element of the Obama campaign.

It happened here in Hartford ....
Throughout the speech, Obama kept a close eye on the crowd. Upon hearing a small group begin chanting “We can’t wait” — a phrase Obama had just used — he pointed them out with an outstretched arm, and within seconds the entire arena was chanting the phrase in unison.
And when a woman appeared to faint in the standing-only VIP section in front of the podium, Obama paused his speech for over a minute as he directed the crowd to make way for an EMT team and tossed a bottle of water from the stage.

Update: Coincidence?:
Our morning show host Ray Dunaway pointed this out after sifting through DU. A little research and this is what I came up with. Coincidence? The Obama version of "crying"? Or am I just cynical (hard not to be these days)? There seems to be a trend at Obama rallies ... women fainting. And interestingly enough the Senator responds the same way every time, almost as if ... naah, couldn't be.

The far left group Code Pink uses staged fainting as part of their bag of tricks.
Code Pink women activists are vehemently anti-war and claim to be the mothers, wives and daughters of the troops fighting in Iraq. Favorite tactics from the Code Pink bag of tricks include street theatrics, hunger strikes and staged fainting in Capitol Hill offices, and protests at campaign stops across the country -- basically anything that gains media attention. They point to men as the cause of war and women as the solution. Their stated purpose is to end the “occupation in Iraq,” although their goals go beyond that. Their leadership and mission are rooted more in communist ideals than in moral objection to unjust war.

A hunger-striking Code Pink member who fainted in the office of Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.) late last month will return to the Hart Senate Office Building Tuesday to resume her protest against Lieberman.

And finally; they faint for Obama but only "nearly faint" for Hillary Clinton.
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) -- Rep. Nita Lowey was hospitalized in New
York City after nearly fainting at a suburban campaign rally for
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Rev. Jeremiah Wright Retires....

The Chicago Tribune is reporting today that yesterday (Sunday Feb 10)
was Reverend Jeremiah H. Wright's last day in the pulpit of the city's Trinity United Church of Christ.Rev. Wright was Barack Obama's spiritual mentor and Wright's sermon "The Audacity of Hope" inspired Obama's breakthrough 2006 speech and highly acclaimed book of the same title. The videos below help illustrate some of the controversy that surrounds Pastor Wright and his church.

Vinyl Records Find New Life....

The strangest thing about EMI’s former record factory in Hayes, west London, is not that it has been lying derelict for years, but that in a ramshackle outbuilding once occupied by the packing and shipping department, 11 of the 120 record presses that immortalised the music of groups such as The Beatles and Pink Floyd are again in full production, turning out singles and LPs.....

Thus begins a really interesting article in the Financial Times (U.K.) about the continued life, and new production, of vinyl records amidst the proliferation of all sorts of new formats (mostly inferior) and the decline of the CD. Even the introduction of new HiFi formats such as "lossless MP3" and "Super Audio CD" have not killed vinyl which, for a variety of reasons explained in the article, maintains a significant niche presence in the marketplace. The article continues:
But if it were only old fuddy-duddies still buying LPs, records would soon be heading the same way as the phonograph cylinder. In fact, younger music fans are helping keep the format alive. After CDs came along, dance music DJs did their bit, staying loyal to the 12in single and influencing fans to buy them. More recently, it has suddenly become fashionable among pop artists to release singles on 7in vinyl as well as in digital formats, often in limited editions that are seen as collectors’ items. The joke is, many of these singles are bought by youngsters who do not even own a turntable, but increasingly the records come with a coupon entitling the owner to a download of the same music....

Ann Coulter at CPAC (not.... well sort of)

Coulter was not invited to speak at CPAC this year because of her controversial comments about John Edwards last year. However, she did manage to get a large crowd in an adjoining venue where she held forth for almost an hour with her usual aplomb and, and arguably fading, brilliance. The video (53:25) from Townhall.com of her appearance is below. The mostly college age audience was understandably enthralled.
http://www.townhall.com/blog/g/b9769...7-c9955af1a2e5

About half of the appearance was devoted to Q & A which enabled the questioners to really draw her out on her opinions i.e. will she really campaign for Hillary; would she vote for McCain if Romney was on the ticket, or alternatively, if Coburn was on the ticket; would she have voted for Giuliani ("Yes, but she would lie to her friends abut it"), and much more.

A friend in another forum replies:
"She's become a caricature of herself. The informed, opinionated, and well-researched woman has become the Republican Banshee. I've no use for hysterics, and I'm someone who thinks Mark Levin is a thoughtful person. But Coulter just reminds me of the reactionist retreads like Roger L. Simon who has stated that anyone in opposition to McCain has "McCain Derangement Syndrome" - in reverse, of course. Well, these sophists can go and call each other names until they run out of clever invectives. In the meantime, there are actual thoughtful people who have walked the metaphorical trenches and done far more than write weekly columns, dedicated their fortunes and their sacred honor to a certain cause, such as John Bolton, who have made far more persuasive arguments than Coulter or Simon could ever hope to make in their wildest dreams. And then, of course, there are those who have dedicated their very lives. This civi, this sheep cannot fathom doing something that would deny them their victory after so much sacrifice on my and their country's behalf. I am convinced McCain feels the same way. To Hell with Coulter and her Party-first approach. We'll have ample time to sort out the messy details of party politics afterwards. It will take a bit more effort on the Conservative's part to bring the Party back in line on certain issues. I don't think that's too high a price to pay."

I pretty much agree, your comments are appreciated. I think as queen of the one liner she is running out of "zing". In these crucial and dangerous times leading up to November she will continue to prowl the college circuit arousing the Young Republicans while the serious conservatives search for ways out of the abyss.

Romney Out....

In a speech to be delivered at the CPAC meeting in Washington, Mitt Romney will announce that he is retiring from the field and will not continue his quest for nomination.
A.P. is reporting:
WASHINGTON (AP) - John McCain effectively sealed the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday as chief rival Mitt Romney suspended his faltering presidential campaign.

"If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror," Romney will say at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.

Speech transcript here.
Excerpts follow:

Our prosperity and security also depend on finally acting to become energy secure. Oil producing states like Russia and Venezuela, Saudi Arabia and Iran are siphoning over $400 billion per year from our economy—that’s almost what we spend annually for defense. It is past time for us to invest in energy technology, nuclear power, clean coal, liquid coal, renewable sources and energy efficiency. America must never be held hostage by the likes of Putin, Chavez, and Ahmendinejad.....

Even though we face an uphill fight, I know that many in this room are fully behind my campaign.” You are with me all the way to the convention. Fight on, just like Ronald Reagan did in 1976. But there is an important difference from 1976: today… we are a nation at war ....

.... Barack and Hillary have made their intentions clear regarding Iraq and the war on terror. They would retreat and declare defeat. And the consequence of that would be devastating. It would mean attacks on America, launched from safe havens that make Afghanistan under the Taliban look like child’s play. About this, I have no doubt.

I disagree with Senator McCain on a number of issues, as you know. But I agree with him on doing whatever it takes to be successful in Iraq, on finding and executing Osama bin Laden, and on eliminating Al Qaeda and terror. If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror.

The Democrats Debate....

I wasted 90 (I didn't watch the entire 2 hours) minutes of my life last night watching the Democrat candidates Obama and Clinton discuss the issues. I would not characterize this as a debate because they are so alike on most of the issues; lovey-dovey, two peas in a pod. It appears that the gloves are back on and that the only question remaining is will the ticket be Clinton/Obams or Obama/Clinton. Personally, I don't think Clinton would ever consent to 2nd billing.

Middletown Straw Poll: Night Two....

CT Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz and Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch at the 2nd night of The Middletown Straw Poll , January 26,
at Holy Trinity Church, Middletown

Although sparsely attended compared with the previous night's function , this event featured a more animated crowd, entertained with political oratory, rock music and children dancing. Once again the Ron Paul supporters were front and center in numbers and enthusiasm as this was a bipartisan event, whereas the previous straw poll at the Middletown Elk's Lodge was a Republican only event.

The beautiful sanctuary of Middletown's Holy Trinity Church could have accommodated many more folks than the 75 or so that showed up. The straw poll ballots offered 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices but after all the ballots were consolidated and tabulated the final result was Ron Paul 23 and Hillary Clinton 21.

Below is raw video from the evening which runs about 15 minutes:

The first Ron Paul speaker was Joshua Katz. (pictured above) Tom Sheehan, a later speaker for Ron Paul made an impassioned speech about the sanctity of our constitution. Hillary Clinton was represented by two speakers, most notably by Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch. (pictured at top) Mike Huckabee was represented, as he was last evening, by William Landers. John Killian, who organized the event, read a short statement about the Obama candidacy while later in the evening a more impassioned speech for Obama was made by Bradley Spahn. Middletown city council member Earle Roberts spoke for the John McCain candidacy. There were no presenters for Mitt Romney, winner of last evening's straw poll, or Rudy Giuliani. The corporate sponser of the event was NEOS, L.L.C., a software consulting firm from Manchester, CT , whose owner, Ernst Renner, presided as M.C.

Special mention must be made of the presence this evening of the lovely, gracious, and animated Susan Bysiewicz, Connecticut's Secretary of the State. Her stand up, hand and arm ballet, by way of explaining the state election requirements for the Feb 5 primary was beautiful and effective. A great many Connecticut registered voters are unaffiliated with a party so Ms. Bysiewicz brought with her stacks of registration forms to enable anyone present to enroll in a political party. I succumbed to her blandishments and switched from independent to party enrolled.

Romney Wins Middletown Straw Poll....

Middletown Mayor Sebastian Giuliano and CT G.O.P. Chair Healey

Very complete video of this event at Brainflation

There was a nice turnout this evening for the Middletown Straw Poll sponsored by Connecticut Republicans. Around 150 people were at the Middletown Elks lodge to hear pitches for the various Republican presidential candidates. The Everyday Republican blog is now reporting the final vote tabulation: Romney 136, McCain 104, Paul 96, Giuliani 34, Huckabee 9, Thompson 2, and Hunter 1.

It was a lively crowd and the Ron Paul supporters were certainly the liveliest! Chris Healy, Connecticut G.O.P. chairman, and the evening's M.C., had to tell the Paul people at one point to quiet down and let all sides be heard. Healy then introduced Middletown's Mayor, Seb Giuliano, who gave a short welcoming address.

Former Massachusetts governor Jane Swift was on hand to speak for John McCain. Her remarks followed a video presentation of McCain's military and P.O.W. experiences.

The Mitt Romney camp also used a video to explain the candidate's experience in business and government. Mayor Mark Bouton of Danbury then spoke on the candidate's behalf.

Ralph Campanara of Rocky Hill gave a humorous and engaging defense of his candidate, Rudy Giuliani.

Mike Huckabee was represented by William Landers, a local businessman.

On Painting the White House Black....

The Joke That Left Them Gasping:

A Greeley (CO) businessman apologized Wednesday after a joke about Illinois Sen. Barack Obama fell flat during the National Western Stock Show's annual Citizen of the West banquet.

William R. Farr was pretending to read telegrams congratulating this year's award recipient, University of Colorado President Hank Brown, when he pulled out a piece of paper and said, "I have a telegram from the White House."

Then he added, "They're going to have to change the name of that building if Obama's elected."

Witnesses said they could hear people gasp in the ballroom of the Adam's Mark Hotel.

"I gasped," said Gov. Bill Ritter, who was sitting at the table with Farr.

Of course blacks themselves, especially rappers, have suggested not changing the name. but painting the White House black. See George Clinton's (no relation to the 1st black president) video featuring his song "Paint the White House Black":

Christmas Story We Missed....

Photos credit: Jim Kleeman
Troop Train to Army/Navy Game

This article by Ronnie Polaneczky appeared in the Philadelphia Daily News, December 22, 2005. This event did not get a lot of publicity at the time because the sponsors, Bennett and Vivian Levin, wished to avoid a media circus or the distraction of Pentagon suits and brass. This true story has been Snopes checked.

Here's a Yule story that ought to be a movie

AND NOW, in time for the holidays, I bring you the best Christmas story you never heard.

It started last Christmas, when Bennett and Vivian Levin were overwhelmed by sadness while listening to radio reports of injured American troops.

"We have to let them know we care," Vivian told Bennett.

So they organized a trip to bring soldiers from Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Bethesda Naval Hospital to the annual Army-Navy football game in Philly, on Dec. 3.

The cool part is, they created their own train line to do it.

Yes, there are people in this country who actually own real trains. Bennett Levin - native Philly guy, self-made millionaire and irascible former L&I commish - is one of them.

He has three luxury rail cars. Think mahogany paneling, plush seating and white-linen dining areas. He also has two locomotives, which he stores at his Juniata Park train yard.

One car, the elegant Pennsylvania, carried John F. Kennedy to the Army-Navy game in 1961 and '62. Later, it carried his brother Bobby's body to D.C. for burial.

"That's a lot of history for one car," says Bennett.

He and Vivian wanted to revive a tradition that endured from 1936 to 1975, during which trains carried Army-Navy spectators from around the country directly to the stadium where the annual game is played.

The Levins could think of no better passengers to reinstate the ceremonial ride than the wounded men and women recovering at Walter Reed in D.C. and Bethesda, in Maryland.

"We wanted to give them a first-class experience," says Bennett. "Gourmet meals on board, private transportation from the train to the stadium, perfect seats - real hero treatment."

Through the Army War College Foundation, of which he is a trustee, Bennett met with Walter Reed's commanding general, who loved the idea.

But Bennett had some ground rules first, all designed to keep the focus on the troops alone:

No press on the trip, lest the soldiers' day of pampering devolve into a media circus.

No politicians either, because, says Bennett, "I didn't want some idiot making this trip into a campaign photo op."

And no Pentagon suits on board, otherwise the soldiers would be too busy saluting superiors to relax.

The general agreed to the conditions, and Bennett realized he had a problem on his hands.

"I had to actually make this thing happen," he laughs.

Over the next months, he recruited owners of 15 other sumptuous rail cars from around the country - these people tend to know each other - into lending their vehicles for the day. The name of their temporary train?

The Liberty Limited.

Amtrak volunteered to transport the cars to D.C. - where they'd be coupled together for the round-trip ride to Philly - then back to their owners later.

Conrail offered to service the Liberty while it was in Philly. And SEPTA drivers would bus the disabled soldiers 200 yards from the train to Lincoln Financial Field, for the game.

A benefactor from the War College ponied up 100 seats to the game - on the 50-yard line - and lunch in a hospitality suite.

And corporate donors filled, for free and without asking for publicity, goodie bags for attendees:

From Woolrich, stadium blankets. From Wal-Mart, digital cameras. From Nikon, field glasses. From GEAR, down jackets.

There was booty not just for the soldiers, but for their guests, too, since each was allowed to bring a friend or family member.

The Marines, though, declined the offer. "They voted not to take guests with them, so they could take more Marines," says Levin, choking up at the memory.

Bennett's an emotional guy, so he was worried about how he'd react to meeting the 88 troops and guests at D.C.'s Union Station, where the trip originated. Some GIs were missing limbs. Others were wheelchair-bound or accompanied by medical personnel for the day.

"They made it easy to be with them," he says. "They were all smiles on the ride to Philly. Not an ounce of self-pity from any of them. They're so full of life and determination."

At the stadium, the troops reveled in the game, recalls Bennett. Not even Army's lopsided loss to Navy could deflate the group's rollicking mood.

Afterward, it was back to the train and yet another gourmet meal - heroes get hungry, says Levin - before returning to Walter Reed and Bethesda.

"The day was spectacular," says Levin. "It was all about these kids. It was awesome to be part of it."

The most poignant moment for the Levins was when 11 Marines hugged them goodbye, then sang them the Marine Hymn on the platform at Union Station.

"One of the guys was blind, but he said, 'I can't see you, but man, you must be f---ing beautiful!' " says Bennett. "I got a lump so big in my throat, I couldn't even answer him."

It's been three weeks, but the Levins and their guests are still feeling the day's love.

"My Christmas came early," says Levin, who is Jewish and who loves the Christmas season. "I can't describe the feeling in the air."

Maybe it was hope.

As one guest wrote in a thank-you note to Bennett and Vivian, "The fond memories generated last Saturday will sustain us all - whatever the future may bring."

God bless the Levins.

Troop Support: Still Most Important Issue

h/t Red Notes from a Blue State

Amidst all the political primaries hullabaloo let's not forget our freedom preserving troops and the veterans!

Excerpt from a long posting by Ron Winter on troops and veterans support:
If this country is going to prevail, if our way of life and our freedoms are to continue in future generations, there will have to be warriors and ultimately veterans. I don't care what the cost is, or what percentage of the federal budget is involved. Whatever is paid to ensure that our military gets the best equipment and treatment, and that veterans get the best after their time on active duty, is worth it.

Without the veterans, without the military, there is no America. Think long and hard about that when you are deciding who to support in the presidential election.

My choice will go to the candidate who is short on lib service, and long on real support vor the military and veterans.

Mrs. Clinton and the 22nd Amendment....

It sure will feel like 3 terms of Clinton if Mrs. Clinton is elected. The more she touts the 8 years as First Lady as "experience", the more the public perceives her as the extension of her husband she really is. Had she left Bill, and struck out on her own, she might be coming across as more honest and legitimate, however less formidable a candidate she might then be sans Bill. The ultra left Huffington Report ran an interesting piece today by Stephen Kaus which concludes:

....The more Hillary tries to use Bill's presidency as experience, the more we feel like it is the same old, same old and the closer it approaches the 22nd Amendment situation, as Ann Althouse points out at the end of this clip. The idea that we have had enough of the Clintons and the Bushes is deeply rooted in our feelings about government. If Hillary had left Bill and were striking out on her own, we would feel less this way, but that is not what she is doing. She is campaigning for a third term while invoking executive privilege as to what she did during the first two.

It is now apparent that Hillary will have trouble surviving this and being nominated Ironically, if she does, the Republicans, the party that has been in almost total power for the past eight years, will have landed jelly side up. Hillary will seem like the continuation of the same old, same old and the GOP will have a fresh face unfettered by the ghost of administrations past.

The Great Christmas Night Raid: 1776

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
“My brave fellows, you have done all I asked you to do, and more than could be reasonably expected, but your country is at stake … The present is emphatically the crisis which is to decide our destiny.”
Gen. George Washington in an appeal to his troops following the surprise attack on the Hessians at Trenton, December 26, 1776

A must read is this article by W. Thomas Smith Jr. about the "special operation" that changed the course of history and turned the war in favor of the continentals 230 years ago. Excerpts:

Continental Army General George Washington’s celebrated “Crossing of the Delaware” has been dubbed in some military circles, “America’s first special operation.” Though there were certainly many small-unit actions, raids, and Ranger operations during the Colonial Wars – and there was a special Marine landing in Nassau in the early months of the American Revolution – no special mission by America’s first army has been more heralded than that which took place on Christmas night exactly 230 years ago........The factors in Washington’s favor were clear: The weather was so bad that no one believed the Continentals would attempt a river crossing followed by a forced march, much less at night. The Continentals were numerically – and perceived to be qualitatively – inferior to the British Army. The Hessians, mercenaries allied to the British and who were garrisoned in Trenton, had a battlefield reputation that far exceeded their actual combat prowess. And no one believed the weary Americans would want to attempt anything with anyone on Christmas.

Here is an illustrated account of the Battle of Trenton from the BritishBattles.com website.

There Must Be a Santa Claus....

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Hillary Clinton predicted Saturday that just electing her President will cut the price of oil.

When the world hears her commitment at her inauguration about ending American dependence on foreign fuel, Clinton says, oil-pumping countries will lower prices to stifle America's incentive to develop alternative energy.

"I predict to you, the oil-producing countries will drop the price of oil," Clinton said, speaking at the Manchester YWCA."

Folks, if you can believe this you will certainly believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy! Further proof that a Clinton will say anything to get elected.

Mrs. Clinton Presents: PRESENTS

The "present" you're going to get from Mrs. Bill Clinton is SOCIALISM folks! That plus your bonus "president/present"; "Slick Willie's" third term. It's really all about Bill and not about her. So let's face facts here. It will be a co-presidency. Hell, according to one reading of the statutes der Schlickmeister could be elected Vice-President , although without the legal ability of succession to the Presidency. So here is what you get with Mrs. Clinton:
1 - Universal Health Care (socialized medicine). Oh, and universal does not mean FREE; Someone's got to pay for it.
2 - Alternative Energy. This a pipe dream and is years away from actuality. We need to be recovering our own plentiful resources of fossil fuels which are going to be the main fuels for years to come.
3 - Bring the Troops Home. This is not going to happen in any full scale manner in the next administration, no matter who is elected. She know this and has stated this.
4 - Universal Pre-K: (more socialism); again, universal does not mean FREE.

Oh, and what about her socialist scheme to cripple our oil industry. Remember the "We'll take those profits" speech?

I've put up a little poll on one of my blogs, so go here and cast your ballot. Sorry, only 2 choices in this one! OK, if you really need to choose someone other than those 2 you can email me your pick.

VFF's Person of Year: David Petraeus

General David Petraeus, who earlier this year made complete fools of his inquisitors in Congress, is Vets For Freedom organization "Person of the Year". The amazing success of the troop surge under his leadership has even the blatantly liberal Washington Post taking notice. (". It’s looking more and more as though those in and outside of Congress who last month were assailing Gen. Petraeus’s credibility and insisting that there was no letup in Iraq’s bloodshed were - to put it simply - wrong.")

See Steady Habits (9/15/07) and Washington Post (12/8/07)

General Petraeus was also one of several runners-up in Time magazine's annual assessment of the most influential personages world wide, settling on V. Putin for the top spot. The VFF blog comments...
"Time magazine .... announced its pick for “man of the year” yet, but we certainly know ours: Gen. David Petraeus, commander of the multinational force in Iraq and architect of the surge strategy that is turning the tide in the war. Petraeus formulated a brilliant counterinsurgency plan. He executed it with care and diligence. And when much of the country didn’t want to notice the security gains that the surge had wrought, he took the national media spotlight to defend his strategy and his honor. In all this, he was nothing less than masterly."

Santa Groped in Danbury + No HO's

A woman on crutches is alleged to have groped Old St. Nick while sitting upon his lap at the Danbury Mall. How one inappropriately touches a heavily dressed Santa while sitting on the bearded one's lap needs some explanation from the authorities who have arrested the miscreant, one Sandrama Lamy who police said:
....inappropriately touched a 65-year-old worker dressed as Santa on Saturday while sitting on his lap, police said. She is charged with fourth-degree sexual assault and breach of peace, both misdemeanors.
Source: Hartford Courant (12/17/07)
The accused has rejoined in an update that:
...(she)denies she even sat on the man's lap.

"I don't know what's going on. I don't know if he was confused, it was a false report," Sandrama Lamy, 33, said this morning.

In other Santa woes:

Earlier this month in Missoula, Mont., a mall Santa was assaulted with a pumpkin pie.

Meanwhile, a department store Santa in Australia claims he lost his job earlier this month because he said "Ho, ho, ho."

His bosses had asked him to say "Hi, hi, hi."

Joe Lieberman to Endorse John McCain

Breaking from Politico:
Sen. Joseph Lieberman (Conn.), who was on the national Democratic ticket in 2000, will cross the aisle to endorse Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) tomorrow, Republican sources said.

The two will appear together on NBC's "Today" show tomorrow, then at an 8 a.m. town hall in Hillsborough, N.H.

The move, which will help cultivate McCain's moderate status, is an effort to draw attention to the McCain campaign, which needs a splash. Otherwise, it does not make sense for McCain because it will only remind core Republicans why they distrust him.

Vets for Freedom Wash. Post Op-Ed

Vets for Freedom published a column carried by The Washington Post last Saturday. The authors are Maj. Gen. (Ret.) John Batiste, who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in Iraq from 2004 to early 2005 and, Lt. Pete Hegseth who served in Iraq with the 101st Airborne Division from 2005 to 2006 and is executive director of Vets for Freedom. Is an important statement and analysis and is quoted here in full.

Getting Beyond Stalemate to Win a War

By John Batiste and Pete Hegseth
Saturday, December 8, 2007

Congress has been entangled in a war-funding debate that pits war "supporters" against antiwar "defeatists." With all sides seemingly entrenched, a stalemate looms. The Pentagon, meanwhile, will soon begin stripping money from its training budget to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Our military men and women deserve better than partisan politics; they deserve honest assessments of our nation's performance in fighting the Long War.

We are veterans of the Iraq war with vastly different experiences. Both of us commanded troops in Iraq. We, too, held seemingly entrenched, and incompatible, views upon our return. One of us spoke out against mismanagement of the war -- failed leadership, lack of strategy and misdirection. The other championed the cause of successfully completing our mission.

Our perspectives were different, yet not as stark as the "outspoken general" and "stay-the-course supporter" labels we received. Such labels are oversimplified and inaccurate, and we are united behind a greater purpose.

It's time to discuss the way forward rather than prosecute the past. Congress must do the same, for our nation and the troops.

Overall, this will require learning from our strategic blunders, acknowledging successes achieved by our courageous military and forging a bold path. We believe America can and must rally around five fundamental tenets:

First, the United States must be successful in the fight against worldwide Islamic extremism. We have seen this ruthless enemy firsthand, and its global ambitions are undeniable. This struggle, the Long War, will probably take decades to prosecute. Failure is not an option.

Second, whether or not we like it, Iraq is central to that fight. We cannot walk away from our strategic interests in the region. Iraq cannot become a staging ground for Islamic extremism or be dominated by other powers in the region, such as Iran and Syria. A premature or precipitous withdrawal from Iraq, without the requisite stability and security, is likely to cause the violence there -- which has decreased substantially but is still present -- to cascade into an even larger humanitarian crisis.

Third, the counterinsurgency campaign led by Gen. David Petraeus is the correct approach in Iraq. It is showing promise of success and, if continued, will provide the Iraqi government the opportunities it desperately needs to stabilize its country. Ultimately, however, these military gains must be cemented with regional and global diplomacy, political reconciliation, and economic recovery -- tools yet sufficiently utilized. Today's tactical gains in Iraq -- while a necessary pre-condition for political reconciliation -- will crumble without a deliberate and comprehensive strategy.

Fourth, our strategy in fighting the Long War must address Iran. Much has been made this week of the intelligence judgments that Iran has stopped its weapons program. No matter what, Iran must not be permitted to become a nuclear power. All options should be exhausted before we use military force, but force, nonetheless, should never be off the table. Diplomatic efforts -- from a position of strength, both regionally and globally -- must be used to engage our friends and coerce our enemies to apply pressure on the Iranian regime.

Fifth, our military capabilities need to match our national strategy. Our military is stretched thin and will be hard-pressed to maintain its current cycle of deployments. At this critical juncture, we cannot afford to be weak. Numbers and capacity matter.

After the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, America was not mobilized for the Long War. This was an opportunity lost, but it is not too late. Many Americans are frustrated by the war effort, the burden of which has been shouldered by less than one percent of our citizenry. Our country is accustomed to winning. We deserve a comprehensive strategy that is focused on victory and guided by decisive leadership. America must succeed in Iraq and Afghanistan, but we also cannot focus too narrowly on those conflicts. We need a regional and global strategy to defeat worldwide Islamic extremism to ensure a safer world today and for future generations.

The day after his famous Pearl Harbor speech, President Franklin D. Roosevelt again addressed the nation. "I was about to add that ahead there lies sacrifice for all of us," he said. "But it is not correct to use that word. The United States does not consider it a sacrifice to do all one can, to give one's best to our nation, when the nation is fighting for its existence and its future life." His words inspired the "Greatest Generation," and they should inspire us again today.

Americans must mobilize for the Long War -- bolster our strained military, galvanize industry to supply troops with what they need right now and fund the strategy with long-term solutions. We have no doubt that Americans will rally behind a call to arms.

America's veterans -- young and old -- are resolved to support and defend the Constitution from all enemies, foreign and domestic. This commitment, and nothing less, should compel us to stand together, in and out of uniform. Would that Congress finds the courage to bury its pride and do the same.

Nonchalance: At the Heart of Good Manners

"Nonchalance....this is why people always seem to be on their best behavior right before they commit suicide." P.J. O'Rourke

Audio read by Tony Randall
